Grown-Up Swimming Week in Review
As Grown-Up Swim Leagues continue to host meets across the country, it can be difficult to keep up. But as leagues kick their seasons off and others wrap up their championships in preparation for our All Star Meet, here’s what’s happening in your neck of the woods.
Pittsburgh 7/19

North Hills managed to hold off PEAQ, but with scores of 629 and 627 respectively, I cannot imagine North Hills is celebrating too hard right now. As usual the ladies did the heavy lifting for both teams, but they certainly appear to be evenly matched, so it’s anyone’s meet when North Hills looks to continue their win streak at Meet 2
Nashville 7/20

We had a thrill in The ‘Ville this week with both 7 Hills and Cottonwood doing their best Oprah impressions - “everyone look under their seats, you get a point! and you get a point! and you get a point!” Combining for a cool 1,600+ points, it is clear we have our very own King Kong and Godzilla battling it out in the pools of the greater NashVegas area. While the 7 Hills ladies were the MVPs of Meet 1, anything could happen when we have Meet 2 in Music City, USA!
Atlanta North 7/21

Grown-Ups were racing the other teams but they were also racing the weather in Atlanta last weekend. We only made it to the IMs (seriously though, why do so many of you people insist on swimming this event? I couldn’t swim it in high school and I certainly don’t plan on trying now, but who am I to yuck someone else’s yum?) The Rapids didn’t seem to mind as they swam their way to victory holding off Medlock Bridge. Fingers crossed for a full evening of fun this weekend!
Atlanta South 7/21

Just kidding Mother Nature stays undefeated. As one of the brave Grown-Ups who battled the weather, I cannot thank Garden Hills enough for their hospitality and for keeping us safe and mostly dry. We made the most out of a bad situation thanks to the patience of everyone involved, but we’ll be doing everything we can to make the next meet twice as much fun.

In what could be the final nail in the coffin for nominative determinism, Slowbrow SC might have to consider a name change before they look to run it back next season. The Grown-Up Swimming DMV League gave us a master class on long-term storytelling this season. Let’s jump back to Meet 1 (recap can be found here). Lost in the bigger story of a meet in which every single event resulted in a new league record time, Slowbro kicked the season off with a strong showing on their way to victory in Meet 1. Hard Times then struck (literally and figuratively) as Slowbro couldn’t seem to capture the gold again with a close second place finish in Meet 2 and a distant 3rd place finish in Meet 3. But rising from the ashes like a phoenix, or whatever the swimming equivalent of a mythical immortal fire bird would be, Slowbro SC managed to win when it counted.
Congratulations to Slowbro and a warning to all other leagues - the DMV looks to pose a serious threat at the All-Star Meet in Hilton Head.
Houston 7/24

Space City kicked things off with a bang. No not a trash can bang, here at Grown-Up Swimming we care too much about the integrity of the game for that. Now since this is the first meet, you might not be familiar with SORA, but if your first thought was “HOU is that?” then kudos for the excellent pun. But SORA is no laughing matter as they managed to hold off Borealis, Unattached and Splash on their way to victory in Meet 1.
H-Town looks to be yet another closely matched league so keep your eyes peeled for more storylines coming out of Clutch City (you can actually address mail to Clutch City, TX and it will still be delivered thanks to USPS immortalizing the clutch-ness of the ‘94 and ‘95 World Champion Houston Rockets)
